Located only 16 km from the Hotel, Chuquicamata is a modern mining town where one can observe the operations of the largest open-pit copper mine in the world. The mine is located 2870 meters a.s.l. and began operating in 1910, although its mineral resources had been discovered centuries before by pre-Hispanic cultures.
